3rd International Symposium on Nanotechnology in Construction (NICOM3)

Introduction
The 3rd International Symposium on Nanotechnology in Construction will be held in Prague from May 31 to June 2, 2009. The symposium is organized by the Czech Technical University. Prague, the?capital of the Czech Republic, is a romantic city with a uniquely preserved historic core. The?symposium venue will be the Faculty of Civil Engineering on the easily accessible Dejvice campus of the Czech Technical University. The NICOM 3 Symposium follows the highly successful NICOM 1 (Paisley, UK 2003) and NICOM 2 (Bilbao, Spain 2005) Symposia.
Who should attend
The Symposium will be of interest not only to academics and material scientists but also to industrial experts, manufacturers, research planning and supporting authorities and R&D representatives. Participation will also benefit anyone who wishes to get informed about up-to-date achievements and perspectives of nanotechnology in construction for strategic planning and investment. It will be a cross-disciplinary event, bringing together R&D experts and users from different fields; all with interest in nanotechnology and construction, but who may not normally meet.
General information
The Symposium will cover three days of the scientific programme. Presentations by speakers including international experts from academia, industry and funding agencies will be complemented by a poster session. Facilities for exhibiting nanotechnology related products and services will be also available. Programme of activities for accompanying persons will be offered. All presented contributions will be published in printed Symposium proceedings in full (published by Springer-Verlag).
The official language for all contributions will be English.
Scope and topics covered

Topics listed below are of particular interest, however, contributions dealing with any aspect of nanotechnology in relation to any sector of construction, from architecture and building to civil engineering, are also invited.

  • Understanding of internal structures of existing construction materials at nano-scale and their properties at macro-scale (e.g. cements, bituminous polymers, etc.)
  • Modification at nano-scale of existing construction materials (steel, cement/concrete, composites). Surfaces and interfaces. Functional films and coatings.
  • Production and properties of nanoparticulate materials, nanotubes and novel polymers with existing or?potential applications in construction.
  • Modeling and simulation of nanostructures. Development of multi-scale numerical models for basic-properties of construction materials (durability, strength)
  • Instrumentation, techniques and metrology at nano-scale, applied or applicable to construction materials (nano-indentation, AFM, FIB, ESEM etc.). Performance standards for measurements at nano-scale. Test procedures, sample preparation and interpretation of results.
  • Development of novel high performance, self-repairing and smart / intelligent materials / structures (sustainability, eco-impact etc.) by exploitation of nanotechnology. Biomimetic and nano-composite materials.
  • Devices applying nanotechnology in development of structural monitoring and diagnostic systems.
  • Health and safety issues and environmental impacts related to nanotechnology during research, manufacture and product use. Review of current legislation.
  • Societal and commercial impacts of nanotechnology in construction, their predictions and analysis.
  • National and international research and development frameworks relevant to nanotechnology and?construction. Analysis of achievements and prospects for future.
